News From the North

This has been sleepover weekend.  Some of our children slept at friends’ homes, and other friends slept over here.  We just traded kids!  Those who were home today went with us to church.  It’s easier to find 5 open seats, than to try to find 8 (Eli goes to children’s church).  After church we went to Culver’s to eat.  Then it’s been a quiet, but productive day at home.

This coming week … more basketball.  Jake has three varsity games, Isabella has a tournament on Saturday, and Luke has a game on Saturday morning.  Both Lisa and I love to watch our children play sports.  There is something so enjoyable about watching your kids do something they love – and doing it well.

Jake has been invited, and has accepted, to join an elite AAU team this spring (MN Comets).  The team will be traveling to Chicago, Kansas City, Las Vegas and several other cities.  They play a total of 10 tournaments and according to parents whose boys have played on this team in the past – they do get exposure to college scouts.  Jake is excited about that.  He really hopes to play basketball in college.

Tomorrow I go to a college Financial Aid Meeting with Lydia.  Lydia does not have her plans for next year sealed-up, but she will go to Zimmerman High School the remainder of the year and finish the requirements needed to get her diploma.  She started this year taking PSEO classes at a local community college.  Mid-way through the semester she dropped every class.  That put her high school graduation in question.  She has since developed a plan with her counselor that should get her there as long as she delivers on the grades.  The new semester starts tomorrow, so Lydia will begin to attend the entire school day, which she hasn’t had to do for a while.

Last week Isabella signed up for high school classes.  The kids are growing up too fast!  Isabella could begin driving with a Learner’s Permit in 5 months!  That is so scary!  First because my little girl is growing up so fast, and second, because Bella would never be able to find her way home.  If she is riding with a friend and their parents, she cannot tell them how to get to her house.  She does not know her way home!  I have two driving kids already, and it seems too soon to add a third.

Love,
JR

News From the North

Yesterday was my 49th birthday.  49 seems so much older in my mind than 48 … but not near as old as 50.  I remember when we had a big celebration for my Dad’s 50th birthday.  At the time I thought he was so old.  Now that’s me!  50 isn’t old at all!

I had a very nice birthday.  My Dad and CJ arrived on Tuesday and are staying until Sunday.  It was great to have them here for my birthday.  I took the day off from work, and while the kids were at school we had a quiet and relaxing day.  I even got in an unplanned nap on the couch.  Then all the kids arrived home from school and it became an evening of activity.  Eli (3 yr. old) has asthma, and when he gets a cold, he can have trouble breathing.  Around 5:30pm he began having great difficulty breathing even after a nebulizer treatment.  We called the doctor, and they told us to go the emergency room.  I am the designated ER transporter when it becomes necessary to take our children.  I think I have enough frequent ER points for a free visit sometime in the future.  Well – after a combo albuterol and steroid treatment and an X-ray to ensure he did not have pneumonia, Eli was doing much better.  I was sent home with 5 of our own combo doses, and a prescription.  We even got home in time for the wonderful birthday dinner Lisa had prepared!  Then I opened presents.  I now own a whole bunch more of my favorite clothing items – Ohio State gear!!

This weekend is the Perfect Storm – everything coming together all at once!  It is packed full of entertainment for Pawpaw and Mimi.    They saw Jake play basketball on Tuesday and again today (Friday).  Isabella will play a basketball game tonight, then two games on Saturday.  Luke plays two games on Saturday and another on Sunday.  He also will be representing his team in the mid-season tournament free-throw contest on Saturday.  Jake will be refereeing 4 youth games between Saturday and Sunday (we are forbidden from watching any of those games!).  On Sunday we will take Pawpaw and Mimi to the airport.  We had to write everything down and coordinate who would be where, and who was doing the transporting.  All four of our family vehicles will be called into action!

Kid Story:
Eli:  “Mommy, will you fix my sock?”
Lisa:  As she reaches down to straighten Eli’s sock, “Sure Eli, I’ll fix your sock.”
Eli:  Sweetly he replied, “Thank you Mommy.  You’re not stupid.”

Love,
JR
