You’re breaking my feelings hurt!

News From the North

The stomach flu has run rampant through our home.  First it was poor Eli.  Then came Lisa, a bunch of kids, and now me.  I’ve decided that there is something wonderful about your kids being old enough to get to the toilet on their own when they are sick.  Eli’s not there yet!

Speaking of Eli … While I was getting ready in the bathroom I splashed water in Eli’s face.  He ran out of the bathroom, then re-appeared and said, “You bwak’n my heawt, and you bwak’n my fweelings huwt!" (You’re breaking my heart, and you’re breaking my feelings hurt)

It’s April 20th – and we woke up to snow.  I mean snow that accumulated on the ground and on the trees.  This has been one long winter!

I went with Lydia to the University of Minnesota Moorhead so she could get registered for classes and learn more about the campus and university life.  We went up Sunday afternoon and stayed in a hotel.  The program started at 8:00 am.  There was a separate agenda for the parents, of which I intended to skip out-on and head back to the hotel.  The program actually ended up being interesting, so I stayed for the entire thing.  Moorhead is a nice town/city when combined with Fargo, which border each other (the Red River runs between them).  The school has about 6,000 students.  The campus is compact and well-kept.  The students seem friendly and the atmosphere of the campus just felt good.  I think it will be a nice school for Lydia.  She only has two minor hurdles left to get over:  1) graduate from high school,  2) figure out how to pay for it.

Last week Luke had his school concert.  A lot of the kids really got into it.  There were hand motions, and props to wave around.  Luke mouthed the words, but barely moved.  He was the most non-enthusiastic kid on the stand.  At one point the students all free-styled danced.  You should see him dance.  He barely moved – just a little arms moving back and forth.  He’s too cool for all that!

Combined with the concert was a activity-night for the kids.  Luke was really excited leading up to the event.  He had built this up in his mind to something really fantastic!  The kids were given a mask as they entered the event.  They were to go around to various games and win small items that they could use to decorate a mask (feathers, pipe cleaners, jewels).  Luke was especially excited about the spinning wheel.  We had to find the spinning wheel first!  We found the room with the spinning wheel, which was just a small wheel with maybe 6 to 8 possible spots to land upon.  Luke spun the wheel.  It only went around maybe once and landed on a two.  He won 2 items to glue to his mask.  As we walked away I asked him if it was as fun as he expected.  He quietly mumbled, “No, not really.”  We made it through all the games, which included eight stations of things like a ring toss, a fish pond, and a can toss.  As we left for the evening I asked him again, was it as fun as you thought it would be?”  He quietly mumbled, “No, not really.”

Sophia is back on Dakota, the horse she showed last year.  She will be riding twice a week.  She starts each session by cleaning the stalls and various other chores.  Then she finishes with about an hour of riding with her instructor.  Sophia is in her element with horses.  It is so fun to see her and the confidence she has working with the horse.

We will be spending Easter with just the nine of us.  After church we’ll have a nice meal, then the traditional Easter egg hunt.  I always fill a bunch of plastic eggs full of candy, and then hide them.  Some years we are stuck inside, but according to the weather forecast, it should be a nice day.  It is no substitute for Grandpa and Grandma’s egg hunts, but I did learn a few of my hiding tricks from Grandpa.

If I don’t talk to you sooner, have a wonderful and Happy Easter.

1 Peter 1: 3-5   Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade–kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.  (NIV, 1984)

Organization Overload

Lydia ---- Lisa's B-Day (Sophia made the cake with too much of Eli's help) ---- Sophia on a windy day
News From the North

We are a fairly well-organized family; knowing where and when we need to be somewhere … most of the time.  Now I must admit - we have a reputation of being late to almost everything (just a few minutes or so), but other than that we are pretty reliable.  The last few days our organization effectiveness was pushed to overload and the result … well let me tell you.

The busy weekend started on Saturday morning.  Jake had two basketball games in St Cloud, which is about 45 minutes from our home.  We had to leave the house at 6:30am (we left at 6:45am).  Our Garmin got us lost and began to take us in a big circle.  We finally found the tournament site and then we watched Jake play two fun basketball games.  We then needed to run a couple errands (one to buy Luke some baseball cleats, and another to buy bread at Great Harvest).  We then ate a quick lunch, and hurried home.  I pulled up to the house, we jumped out and Lisa moved over to the driver’s seat.  She left to pick Isabella up from the hair salon.

I ran inside the house, and made sure Luke was ready for his baseball try-outs.  He was mostly ready, except he had the wrong socks on.  A quick adjustment fixed that.  Then Luke says, “Dad, I left my glove over at Daniel’s house.”  “Quick, get on your bike and go get it.”  I went on-line, down-loaded the necessary registration form, filled it out, wrote the check and was ready to leave just as Luke got back home.  Luke says, “They weren’t home and my glove is in their garage.”  We scrambled to find another glove.  Found an acceptable substitute.  “Where’s your helmet?”  Can’t find it!  Quick and frustrating search – found one – although not Luke’s, but it would do in a pinch.  We jumped in the car (me a bit stressed) and drove to the location I thought I saw on the website.  No one is there!  Ok – there is another likely location.  Drove there.  No one there either!  Now we are late.  Stress level is increasing!!  I start driving to one other potential try-out site.  I call Jake and ask him to check the website to see what I missed.  Jake looks and he says it is being held at the original spot.  After a few seconds, “Dad – it says 4/10 … that it is tomorrow.”  Stress evaporates!  Right at that moment I drive by a big sign on the side of the road that says, “Zimmerman Youth Baseball Mandatory Evaluations – 4/10.”

The rest of the weekend includes 2 basketball games for Isabella south of the Twin Cities, 2 basketball games for Jake north of the Twin Cities, Luke’s try-outs – for real this time (but we are better prepared!), pick up Isabella’s friend who was supposed to attend Bella’s games, but Lisa forgot – so a sleep over was the make-good gesture, and finally a basketball banquet for Jake’s high school team; which Lisa had to prepare something for the potluck dinner.

We got through it all relatively unscathed.  Then comes Monday after school.  Isabella has practice in Minneapolis about 50 minutes from our home.  Lisa picks her up from school and takes her to practice.  On the way she gets a call from the dentist asking where Jake might be.  Oh no! … This is the day he has a two hour appointment that has been scheduled for a long time – both Lisa and I were supposed to be there.  Jake is playing basketball with friends – not picking up his cell phone.  I’m 30 minutes away.  Lisa is 30 minutes away taking Isabella.  No good solution exists.  We can’t make it.

Ok – then about two hours later … I’m still at work and it’s 6:58pm.  I receive a text from Sophia.  “I need picked up at 7:00.”  I respond, “Where are you.”  She tells me she’s been working with her horse at the stables, and “I need picked up now.”  I’m 20 minutes away, and I know nothing about this so I assume that someone else must be on their way to pick her up.  I call Lisa, and she says she thinks Lydia is picking her up.  I call Lydia; she is not picking her up, and is farther away than me.  I run from work, jump in my car, and arrive about 30 minutes late.  Another scheduling breakdown.

We are now re-thinking our method of keeping track of commitments and appointments.  Maybe hiring a family secretary would be best.  Or a chauffeur.  Or both!

JR

Getting ready to go cheer for Jake at the State Tournament!
News From the North

Lisa and I had a wonderful one night “escape” this weekend to celebrate Lisa’s birthday.  We stayed the night in the Cambria Suites about 35 minutes from our house.  For $79.00 we get a nice suite in a new hotel, contemporary design and decor, two rooms, two TV’s (came in handy while I watched the NCAA Tournament & Lisa watched … something else – not sure what), super comfortable king bed, cool bathroom.  You can’t beat it.  I think the hotel is still trying to attract business, and the rate on the weekend is always low!

We arrived in our room, set down our stuff, sat on the bed and soaked up the silence.  After a few minutes we looked at each other, smiled, and said, “Isn’t this nice!”  Later we had a wonderful dinner at a new restaurant we’ve never tried before.  It is fun to go somewhere new, especially when it turns out to be good!  We slept in and got ready just in time to check-out.  Then coffee and a pastry at Caribou while we read the paper.  Then we went shopping for Lisa’s birthday presents.  We had a nice late lunch.  Did a little more shopping, then stopped at Target for a few necessities, then got home about 6:00pm.  It was a great time away, but we were both excited to get home and see our children.  They seemed to be happy to see us!

While we were gone Lydia came downstairs and saw Eli run into the bathroom and lock the door.  She went to the door and told Eli to let her in.  At first he would not, but after a threat or two he unlocked the door.  Lydia opened the door to find Eli curled up in a ball in the corner.  Lydia made him get up, and when he did she saw that he had chocolate all over his face and hands.  After a quick investigation she found that the chocolate bar Sophia had bought for Lisa’s birthday was missing.  “Eli, you ate the candy bar that Sophia got for mommy’s birthday!”  He looked up at her and said, “I sawy.  I was just so hungwy!”

Car Trouble!  Late last summer I purchased two cars for my new driving kids.  I got each of them a car with a little less than 100,000 miles.  Each vehicle seemed to be in good condition.  I bought Lydia a Pontiac Bonneville, which so happens to be the same make and model as my first car.  My big, sun-faded blue 1962 Bonneville looked a bit different than Lydia’s.  Well the car we got Lydia has been nothing but trouble.  The mechanic just notified us that we should sell or trade-in the car quickly.  It is going to be in need of a new transmission soon.  The cost of the repair – nearly 1/3 the cost of the car!  Well, I cannot in good conscious sell a car knowing that it is about to need a major repair like that.  What a bummer!

Today is Lisa’s birthday.  Our tradition is to go out to dinner whenever Lisa or the kids have a birthday (I choose to stay home for a nice meal) – the birthday girl gets to pick the place.  Sophia made Lisa a cake when we were gone this weekend.  I haven’t seen it, but according to the other children, it looks very interesting.  Apparently Eli grabbed a handful or two of cake when it was being frosted.  He has an uncontrollable sweet tooth.  It should be a fun evening!

JR
