News from the North

We had a very nice Christmas. We missed not being with family, but it was also nice being home with all nine of us, nowhere to go, nowhere to be and nothing to do. It was a beautiful, very white Christmas this year. The pine trees surrounding our home are all full of snow, looking like a postcard. It’s very cool.

By the way – no Christmas photo taken yet this year. We still plan to take one and get it sent out … a bit late.

Today we are traveling 3 hours north to watch Jake and the Zimmerman Thunder play in a holiday basketball tournament. We’re staying the night and then watching more basketball tomorrow.

Kid story: Eli was sitting on Lisa’s lap, tugging at his pull-up and was wiggling uncomfortably. He said, “My peenee hurts, it won’t go down.” He then pulled his pull-up down exposing himself. He looked at it and said, “I’m going to have to go to the doctor. “ Then he smiled slyly, and said, “Just hidding (kidding).”

Received a call from the Principal!

News From The North

Today Lisa received a call from the Principal of Isabella’s (our 8th grader) school. The Principal told Lisa that it frustrated him that he had to make so many negative calls to parents. This year he decided he would identify kids that stood out in a positive way, and call the parents to let them know. The principal went to all the teachers and asked for examples of positive behavior. He said that three different teachers gave him Isabella’s name. He shared an example of how she is caring and kind, always smiling, and an overall great kid. That was a very nice gesture, and one that made Isabella’s parents very proud!!

The Wilson Household: full of activity and fun.

Lydia – working at Goodwill and finishing up her senior year at Zimmerman High School.

Jake – just inducted into National Honor Society, playing varsity basketball as a sophomore, and refereeing youth basketball games on Saturday’s.

Isabella – finished playing volleyball and is now playing travel basketball.

Sophia – participating in 4H and will be riding in horse-shows during the winter (indoor arenas!).

Gabriella – finished up fall basktball and is now taking tennis lessons.

Luke – playing house basketball, always wants to be with friends.

Eli – doing very well with his potty training, as well as talking non-stop.

JR & Lisa – well … driving kids around and attending youth activities!

I Am Thankful

I am thankful for God’s goodness. I am thankful that I am saved by His grace. I am thankful for my wife who is beautiful inside and out. I am thankful for my seven children and the joy that they bring to my life. I am thankful for the wonderful family that I treasure. I am thankful for good health. I am thankful for my job. I am thankful for dedicated friends. I am thankful for a warm home, plentiful food and clean water. I am thankful for living in the United States of America.

… I’d also be thankful for an Ohio State University victory over Michigan on Saturday!

BIG Teeth

Sophia

Well … winter is unofficially here. I don’t know how many inches of snow (maybe 8” to 10”) we got yesterday, but it was a decent snowfall. The girls made a 6 foot snowman in the front yard. The news said there were over 400 accidents in MN caused by the storm. Even so, by the end of the day the roads were mostly clear and life went on as normal. They can clear it off quick in MN!

Lisa, Jake (plus a friend), Isabella (plus a friend), Sophia, Gabi and I attended a TobyMac concert last night. Lydia stayed home to babysit Luke and Eli. We were treated to a hard rock opening act called Skillet. Between songs they had a good message, but the music was a little hard for all of us. TobyMac was great! He had a great message, the music was great, and the concert was entertaining. Afterward we went to Broadway Pizza. It was a nice night.

Today (Sunday) was an unusual day – we had no commitments!!!! No games, no one to see, no where to go. It was awesome to have a free day. I DVR’d the Buckeye vs. Penn State game and we watched it this afternoon. For 24 hours I stayed away from the TV, Facebook, the radio – everything - so that I wouldn’t know the results. Then we watched the Buckeyes win today!!

Basketball for the kids is about to start full swing. Isabella has already begun, playing on a new travel team that will be very good. She is getting better each year, and we can already see her playing with greater confidence this season. Bella plays in a tournament next weekend.

High School basketball will start in one week, and the early appearance is that Jake will be playing (maybe starting) on the varsity team (he is a sophomore). We’ll see. He is the only sophomore to be asked to play with the varsity team in a pre-season league. The first varsity game will be on December 2nd.

Luke will also be playing basketball this winter. Sophia will be involved in 4H. We have worked out an arrangement to lease another horse for the upcoming 4H season.

All the kids are growing-up so fast. Eli is getting big! I would love to slow down time with him. I love his age right now! All the kids (except maybe Lydia) are doing well in school.

Oh yeah – I almost forgot. We let Lydia get a dog. It is a great dog so far. He is very cute and tiny. He is so small he looks more like a kitten than a dog. The kids are having a great time with “Leo.”

Luke – 7 years old: Lisa was checking Luke’s teeth after he said he did a good job brushing. Lisa scraped off a little “scum” from his front tooth. She asked, “If you did a good job, why am I able to get this off your tooth?” Luke replied, “I don’t know. It’s hard to get everything off these ones. They are BIG!”

So – here we go …

News from The North

Although it never was (or ever is) a quiet summer, school has started and so has the flurry of our life. I don’t say this as a negative thing, but as the reality of having a bunch of active children who enjoy being involved in extracurricular activity. We really enjoy watching our children participate in the things they enjoy. Right now we have Jake in football, Isabella in volleyball and fall basketball, Sophia in 4H, Gabriella in basketball, and Luke in football. Lydia is taking all college classes in her senior year of high school through the PSEO program and working many hours at a local coffee shop. And then there is Eli who is just about to turn 3. He’s not involved in activities yet … but he is full of activity.

This summer both Lydia and Jake got their driver’s license and are able to help with the logistics of getting everybody where they need to be. It seems like every day Lisa and I have to formulate a strategy to make sure we get everybody where they need to go. Somehow it all just works out.

Most of you know that Jake, as a sophomore, was awarded the starting quarterback role at Zimmerman HS due to a tragedy in which the community’s star high school athlete was killed in a car accident. Although the situation was a difficult one for Jake to be placed in, he rose to the occasion and did a good job in the first two games of the season … until the last play of the 2nd game. A player fell on Jake’s knee and caused it to dislocate. He suffered a partially torn MCL and meniscus. Jake is undergoing physical therapy and progressing well. He has been out three weeks and may be able to return in the week or so. His recovery has been much faster than expected. Jake is already lifting weights and jogging. The school’s trainer, the orthopedic doctor and physical therapist are working together to ensure he builds the strength back into his knee.

Isabella is attending a new school this year. We decided to move her out of the combined high school/middle school environment we have in Zimmerman. Although Bella was very, very anxious all summer about the move, she is doing well, and enjoying the change. She has already met many new friends, and the students (most of them) have been very kind to her. So far the decision seems to be absolutely the right one.

Eli will celebrate his 3rd birthday in a couple weeks. We have a June, July, August and September birthday among the children and Eli is really struggling with the fact that none of them have been his. He is so excited about his birthday. He says, “I need a birthday!” And he wants toy cars for his presents!

After several kids, we just aren’t very aggressive about potty training. We just sort of let it happen when it happens. Well Eli is starting to begin the process. Although he isn’t very consistent yet – he is having some success. A few of Jake’s friends came to the house this weekend. Eli ran up to one of them and the first thing he told them was that he had to poop. Not really the thing that a 16 year old knows what to do with. Another sweet thing Eli has been taught - when someone is teasing him, he tells them off by saying, “Shut your mouth whitey!” It is quite funny. At one of the recent football games a couple of older kids came up to Luke and his friends and started to cuss them out and threaten them. Isabella (holding Eli) came to their rescue and ran off the older boys. As she was doing it Eli yelled, “Shut your mouth whitey!” Eli is actually very sweet. He just has that ornery Wilson side to him. He got it from his PawPaw.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will be coming to Minnesota this season on October 30th. One of the local TV stations has given the company I work for some tickets to the game. I will be in the new TCF Stadium in my scarlet and gray cheering the Buckeyes on to another major victory!

Thanks for letting me tell you a little about what’s going on in the Wilson home. When I’m moved I’ll be updating this Blog and telling you more. If it is boring to you … well then don’t read it. One thing that I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older … I find myself funnier and more interesting than anyone else does. That’s ok – as long as I’m laughing and entertained – then this Blog has at least one very dedicated fan … me!!!! I just keep logging in and reading the thoughts, wit and wisdom of my favorite author – ME!!
